Man i remember grocery shopping like that in college. Thinking about calories per dollar. Top ramen for 10¢ each, short grain rice for 25¢ a pound. A fiver could go a loooong way :)

Boston! Though it's not from exactly a current time period. Kay goes to college in the early 2000's so the prices might be a touch cheaper than we're used to now. I can't believe how much food has skyrocketed in the last few years.
